Liberal Arts
AA/BFA Graduation Requirements
Eighteen units of Liberal Arts classes are required for AA graduation (up to 36 may be transferred in)
45* units of Liberal Arts classes are required for BFA Graduation (up to 36 may be transferred in)
* Students enrolling prior to Spring of 2006 are only required to take 42 units of Liberal Arts courses.
Required Liberal Arts Courses for AA/BFA Graduation
- LA108: English Composition I: Composition for the Artist*
*[LA108 is a prerequisite for all Liberal Arts courses with a writing component, and must be taken during first two semesters.]
Students enrolling prior to Spring 2006 are not required to take this course.
- LA110: English Composition II - Narrative Storytelling
- LA120: Art History Through the 15th Century
- LA121: Art History Through the 19th Century
- LA202: English Composition III - Narrative Documentary
- LA222: 20th Century Art (for BFA requirements only)
- LA270: US History [Domestic students may substitute with LA171: Western Civilization] (for BFA requirements only)
The remainder of Liberal Arts units are electives by advisement. Consult with your Advisor or Department Director for a list of suggested LA elective courses appropriate for your major. LA units may not be substituted with art electives.
Waiving Required Courses
There are several ways in which students may waive the following required Liberal Arts courses:
- LA108: English Composition I - Composition for the Artist
- LA110: English Composition II - Narrative Storytelling
- LA120: Art History Through the 15th Century
- LA121: Art History Through the 19th Century
- LA202: English Composition III - Narrative Documentary
- LA222: 20th Century Art (for BFA requirements only)
- LA270: US History / LA171: Western Civilization (for BFA requirements only)
Coursework from a Previous Institution:
When students are unable to transfer in all of their required Liberal Arts courses, comparable course work from other colleges and universities will be considered for waiver.
SAT and AP Scores:
In some cases, SAT or AP scores will qualify for waiver.
Waiver Exams:
AAU offers waiver exams for the following required Liberal Arts English courses:
- LA108: English Composition I - Composition for the Artist
- LA110: English II - Narrative Storytelling
- LA202: English III - Narrative Documentary
LA108 waiver exams will be offered during the weeks prior to the start of each semester, and during the weeks prior to registration. LA110 and LA202 waiver exams are given in the Liberal Arts Department by appointment throughout the semester.
Please contact your Student Services Advisor or the Liberal Arts Department to discuss the waiver process. *Online Only Students: Please contact your Academic Advisor to discuss the waiver process and to arrange to take a waiver exam in your city.
Upcoming LA108 waiver exams on the AAU campus:
- Friday May 12th: 12:00pm - 2:00pm in Room 804 at 180 New Montgomery St.
- Wednesday May 17th: 3:30pm - 5:30pm in the Auditorium at 79 New Montgomery St.
- Thursday May 18th: 3:30pm - 5:30pm in the Auditorium at 79 New Montgomery St.
No registration required for above exams, just show up!
