Club Sports FAQs
What are Club Sports?Club Sports is an organization through Campus Recreation that allows
students to participate in both competitive and non-competitive contests between themselves and
other colleges.
What is the difference between Club Sports and Varsity Athletics?Unlike varsity athletics,
Club Sports is allocated a small budget through the University. Most of the Club Sport
funding comes through alumni or corporate donations, fundraising events and activities, membership
dues, & student fees. Coaches are either students or volunteers, very rarely is a Club
Sport coach paid for their position, and if they are paid, it comes from the fundraising events the
club holds.
Who can participate in Club Sports? All students of Academy of Art University are eligible
to compete in Club Sports.
What Club Sports are offered to me?As of right now AAU has:
Fencing
Martial Arts
Swimming
We are working on starting the Crew and Sailing teams.
Any other Clubs that you are interested in (i.e. Bowling, Golf, Water Polo, Lacrosse,
Wrestling, Ice Hockey, Roller Hockey, Badminton, Snowboarding, Ultimate Frisbee), please contact
the Campus Recreation Director Adam at
awallace@academyart.edu.
Are there try-outs for Club Sports?Depending on the club, there could potentially be
try-outs for the competitive team. However most of the clubs will not have a try-out process.
Is there travel involved? If the club chooses to participate in a tournament, then yes
travel could potentially be involved. Travel is not mandatory for all clubs, but if the club
chooses to participate in a league that challenges other Universities, then students will have to
travel.
Do I need experience to participate?Depending on the club and level of competition they
wish to compete at, experience may or may not be necessary. Most clubs do not require that
you have previous experience, and will encourage newcomers to their sport!
Where can I get more information if my questions were not answered here? You can come by
the Campus Rec office at 620 Sutter or contact them at 415-447-8496. You can also email the
Club Sport Coordinator Adam at
awallace@academyart.edu.
