FAQs

How can I…?

Get a locker

At the beginning of each semester. $15 per locker during the fall and spring semesters, and $10 during the summer session. $25 for the whole year. Accounts Receivable department, 79 NM, 3rd Floor. After payment is made, students then go to the Registrar’s office, also located on the 3rd Floor, to obtain their locker number and combination. Lockers may be renewed for the following semester as long as the student is registered for that semester. All lockers must be emptied at the end of each semester.

File a grievance

At the education office, 79 NM, 4th Floor. Students should present a letter of grievance to their department director and a meeting with the school’s grievance committee will be scheduled for the student.

Audit a class to see if I like it

It is against Academy policy to audit any classes and doing so grants the school grounds for the student’s dismissal.

Add/Drop classes

All Add/Drop forms must be signed by an Admissions Representative or Student Services Advisor.

Change my major

While it is possible for a student to change their major, be aware that most classes are specialized in a certain area, and if a student decides to change majors not all of the classes they have taken prior to the change will count, unless they are Liberal Arts classes.

Contact an advisor if mine is absent

Any available advisor should be able to help you with any questions you may have. Call the Academy operator at 415.274.2200 and ask for an advisor.

And…?

What are lab and course fees for?

Lab fees allow students to reserve a computer for a determined number of hours of their personal use in the lab. All departments have course fees for specific courses. These fees cover supplies and services. Any advisor or the Registration Department, located in 79 New Montgomery on the 3rd Floor, can provide additional information on lab and course fees.

Why are there so many changes in the curriculum?

The Academy is a highly competitive school that is constantly revising and updating its curriculum in an effort to keep students trained to be most competitive in the marketplace. Student advisors can help you with any changes to department curriculum.

Will my units transfer to another school?

Since the Academy specializes in the Art & Design courses, there may be a chance that not all of the courses taken here will be accepted at other schools. Curriculums vary from school to school and finding another specialized University like the Academy may prove to be difficult.

How much does a bus ride cost in San Francisco?

Surface buses and MUNI cost $1.50 for a ride, and BART fares vary depending on your destination. Information on BART fares and Schedules can be found at any BART station, or at www.bart.gov. A MUNI Fast Pass can be purchased for unlimited MUNI travel for a month for $45. More Information on MUNI schedules and fares can be found at www.sfmuni.com.

Who do I talk to if I have a housing issue?

The Housing Department is located at 79 NM on the 3rd Floor, 415-618-6335. Office hours are Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 5:30pm. Please refer to VP of Housing, Rebecca Delgado-Rottman, for questions.

What are Directed Studies?

Directed studies are a part of the MFA program and can only be taken by Graduate students.
