MPT Telecine Studio Policies
How to Make a Reservation Request
Requests are made by downloading our reservation request form, and e-mailing it to telecine@academyart.edu. Put down two available transfer times, and we will e-mail to confirm. Please be aware that you must be enrolled in a class with Telecine studio time included.
Please keep in mind this is a request only, and does not automatically ensure the reservation time you request, especially during finals. Please plan in advance.
Reservations may be canceled if you are 15 minutes late for your transfer appointment.
Reservation Schedule
- Cinematography class Cine 2 can make appointments after 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
- Cinematography class Cine 3 & 4 can make appointments 10:00 AM to 11:00 PM.

Telecine Services
The Telecine Studio offers Standard Definition 16, S16, 35, S35 and 35mm 3-perf film transfers from a Quadra Telecine paired with a Da Vinci 8:8:8 color correction panel for 10 bit uncompressed, ProRes HQ, and DVC Pro HD QuickTime outputs to a student's external drive.
If the student wishes, the output may be upscaled to HD resolution via our Teranex upconverter for improved detail on large HD monitors.
We also offer digital video color correction on our Assimilate Scratch DI workstation, which can work with Red footage, Uncompressed HD QuickTime files, Image Sequences such as Cineon, DPX and TIFF, as well as compressed sources such as DV, HDCAM, and DVCPro HD.
Preparation
Film must be prepped for Telecine prior to your reservation time. The lab will do this upon your request. They will load your film onto a 3" core, splice 10' ft. of leader onto the head and tail of the film, and ensure the film is clean of dust and debris. Please be sure to bring in your negative.
For SCRATCH or COLOR sessions, please drop off your external drive ahead of time with the files clearly labeled. Please supply us with either .mov, R3D or DPX files with your EDL.
When transferring to External Drive
Please make sure of the following when bringing an external drive to the Telecine Studio.
- Your drive is Mac formatted as MAC OS EXTENDED. If it's FAT 32 we will not be able to transfer to your drive.
- Make sure you have enough room on your Mac formatted hard drive to accommodate the QuickTime file you receive.
- Use the list below as a rule of thumb for calculating how much drive space you will need for the amount of footage you transfer:
| Uncompressed 10 bit |
720x480 |
= |
2 gigs/minute |
| Uncompressed 10 bit |
1920x1080 |
= |
9 gigabytes/minute |
| Uncompressed 8 bit |
1920x1080 |
= |
7 gigabytes/minute |
| Apple Pro Res 4:2:2 |
1920x1080 |
= |
1 gigabyte/minute |
| Apple Pro Res HQ |
1920x1080 |
= |
1.6 gigs/minute |
- For quick calculation, remember that at 24 FPS:
- 400 feet of 16mm film = about 11 minutes running time
- 400 feet of 35mm film = about 4 minutes running time
- If you don't already have one, please buy a 500 gigabyte or greater capacity hard drive with Firewire 800 and eSATA ports. USB is unacceptable for very large files due to its slower transfer speed.
How to Format Your External Hard Drive - Mac OS X
- Backup any data on the drive - formatting will erase everything.
- Open "Disk Utility" (Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility).
- Click on the External Drive.
- Click on the "Erase" tab.
- In "Volume Format" select Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
- Click "Erase."
