Since Academy of Art University’s art scholarships program was founded over forty years ago, we have helped over 45 thousand aspiring artists and designers pursue their educational goals in art and design. Academy of Art University offers a number of innovative and inexpensive ways for first-time students, high school students, and teachers to improve their skills and experience all that we have to offer. The Academy has awarded over $10 million in grants and scholarships since 2012.

Alumni Tuition Discount

The Alumni Tuition Discount supports Academy alumni who are now applying to or enrolling in a graduate degree program or a second graduate degree program at Academy of Art University by offering eligible students a 15% overall discount on their program tuition.

Award Information

  • This discount is for the recipient only and not redeemable for cash. It may only be applied toward tuition expenses.

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicant must have previously completed an undergraduate degree at Academy of Art University (BA, BA2, BS, BS2, BFA, BFA2, BARCH, MA, MFA). Personal Enrichment students, Online Award of Completion students, and students earning a Certificate are not eligible for this grant.
  • Applicant must have applied to or be enrolled in a graduate program at Academy of Art University. In other words, applicant must be pursuing an MA or MFA or their second MA or MFA degree at Academy of Art University.
  • Applicant must remain continuously enrolled at least ½ time throughout the academic year in order to qualify (unless only 3 units are remaining in the student's final semester).
  • Applicant must be a US Citizen, eligible Non-Citizen, or International citizen.

Academy of Art Military Scholarship

The Military Scholarship provides U.S. servicemembers (Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard, and Coast Guard) an opportunity to start preparing for a career in art and design. This art scholarship applies toward any* online undergraduate-level course.

Award Information

  • The purpose of the scholarship is to encourage and inspire transitioning servicemembers to become future artists and designers.
  • Program provides a tuition scholarship for a maximum of:
    • Up to 6 undergraduate course units per semester
    • $1,869 per class per semester, for a maximum amount of $3,738 per semester
    • 12 Total Units maximum
    • Lifetime Maximum of $7,476 per student

Minimum Eligibility Requirements

  • This scholarship is open to all U.S. servicemembers (Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard, and Coast Guard).
  • All Military Scholarship recipients must provide a copy of his/her approved Military Tuition Assistance form for scholarship eligibility.
  • Student must complete course. Withdrawal from any Military Scholarship course will result in forfeiture of the scholarship that will require the payment of full tuition for the specified course.
  • Previous Military Scholarship recipients that have met the maximum use of one course (3 units) per semester for a maximum of four semesters (max. 12 units) are not eligible.
  • Applicants should be first-time students who will utilize the scholarship to fund the first 4 sequential semesters or until they reach their maximum lifetime limit of $7,476, whichever comes first.

Teacher Grants

The Teacher Grant provides high school and community college art teachers an opportunity to practice and improve their skills. These full-tuition art scholarships apply toward any regular undergraduate course and are subject to limited availability.

  • Provide teachers & counselors the opportunity to refresh and expand their skills as well as tap into the creative community in San Francisco

Program Information

Program provides a full tuition scholarship for a maximum of:

  • Three undergraduate course units for Online or On-Campus (Summer Only)
  • Three undergraduate course units for Online (Fall/Spring Only)

Recipients are responsible for all other costs & fees including: application fee, registration fee, lab fees, supplies, room and board, transportation and any other expenses

Fall 2018

Deadline to apply: August 17, 2018

Semester Dates: September 6 - December 22, 2018

Application Status*: August 27, 2018

*Applications are reviewed by the Academy's Teacher Grant Committee. All applicants will be notified of their Application Status by the date listed

  • Previous Teacher Grant Recipients are not eligible to apply. Grants are limited and it is the University’s mission to provide the opportunity to as many educators as possible.
  • All applicants must provide: copy of teaching certificate, resume, letter of intent, & recommendation letter from school principal, dean or department chairperson.
